Dato' Dr. Subrahmanyam Balan
Chief Consultant Anaesthesiologist to HM Sultan Johor & Head of Istana Johor Medical Services
Dato' Dr. Subrahmanyam Balan is a distinguished Chief Consultant Anaesthesiologist to His Majesty Sultan Johor and Head of Istana Johor Medical Services, renowned for his pivotal role in advancing medical care in Johor and beyond. His extensive career includes serving as the Consultant Specialist Coordinator for the Health Services of the Late Sultan Iskandar of Johor from 1999 to 2009 and as a Consultant Specialist and member of the Johor State Health Advisory Board under His Majesty Sultan Ibrahimm Sultan Johor.
Dr. Balan has also been an integral figure in medical services for the Sultan of Johor, providing expert care during medical overseas trip to Sydney for Surgical Treatment and at 2 previous major Ruler's Conferences. He serves as the Advisor and Clinical Coordinator for State Anaesthetic and Intensive Care Services in Johor and is the Vice Chairman of Hospital Operating Services Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru. His academic contributions include roles as Chief Examiner for the Post Basic Intensive Care Course under the Ministry of Health and a faculty member of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care at Monash Medical College.
Among his notable achievements, Dr. Balan established the first cardiac center at Penang General Hospital in 1994, a pioneering $25 million project that set new standards for heart care in Malaysia. He also spearheaded the creation of the Sultanah Aminah Heart Centre in Johor Bahru in 1996, a $34 million initiative that involved comprehensive infrastructure development and training. His other contributions include the establishment of the Acute Pain Service in 2004 and the Anesthesia Clinic in 2007.
Dr. Balan has been honored with numerous awards, including the Setia Paduka Mahkota Johor (SPMJ) conferred by His Majesty Sultan of Johor with the honorary title of Dato’ Seri in 2009, the Darjah Paduka Mahkota Johor (DPMJ) with the title of Dato in 2002, and the Setia Mahkota Johor (SMJ) in 2000. His service excellence was recognized with an award from the Johor State Medical Services in 1998.
A prolific contributor to medical research and training, Dr. Balan has published over 20 papers and trained more than 24 anaesthetic specialists and 14 paramedics in advanced cardiopulmonary bypass technology. He has also educated over 240 nurses in Intensive Care Courses and conducts yearly infection control training and CPR workshops for medical professionals.
